Nem titok, hogy előszeretettel túrom a netet ismeretlen csapatok után kutatva. Rengeteg olyan zenekar ügyködik ugyanis az undergroundban, akikre nem vetül a reflektorok fénye és csillogása, akik keményen megdolgoznak minden egyes koncerten azért, hogy maguk mellé állítsák a közönséget. Mivel ezek a bandák a "szakma" elvárásaitól, és a túlzott kasszacsörgés okozta bénultságtól mentesen alkothatnak, nem ritkán sokkal minőségibb, élvezhetőbb produkciót tesznek le az asztalra, mint a fősodorban lévők. Különösen üdítő, hogy ha a fentebb említett minőséget egy, a metal térképének perifériáján elhelyezkedő csapat hozza létre. Nem kerülgetem tovább a kerülgetnivalót: számomra 2012 legnagyobb meglepetése (ahogy 2011-ben a mostanra már második albumán dolgozó angol Subversion debütje) a chilei Dishearthed hatszámos EP-je volt.

A nyolcvanas évek vége óta kergetik a dél-amerikai csapatok az álmot. Az álmot, melyet négy Belo Horizonte-i csóró metalos hozott közelebb a számukra. A manapság Cavalera-mentesen üzemelő Sepultura sikere is kellett ugyanis a death metal színtér nyolcvanas évek végi beindulásához, nem mellesleg ők voltak azok, akiket még a nagy példakép, a színpadi munkájáról igencsak híres Slayer is csak félve vitt el magával turnézni, már ha épp elvitték őket. Máig ők a leghíresebb dél-amerikai metalzenekar, és hirtelen a szintén brazil Angrán kívül egyáltalán nem tudnék számottevő, Európában is szélesebb körben ismert csapatot mondani a kontinensről. Idővel viszont ez megváltozhat...
Véletlenül akadtam a talagantei srácok második hanganyagára (az első a 2009-ben megjelent Between The Light demó volt), és amint belehallgattam, éreztem, hogy ez tetszeni fog. Pont azt a zenét játsszák, ami nekem olyannyira bejön - keményen megriffelt metalzene, ami ugyanakkor a parádés énekdallamoknak sincs híján. Ha hasonlítgatni kell, akkor mindenképp a skandináv melodeath színtér másod-harmadkorszakos csapatait mondanám, a Soilwork, a Scar Symmetry, és a Mercenary neve ugrott be legtöbbször az anyagot hallgatva.
Az érdemi munkát 2009-ben megkezdő, Ignacio Brossard énekes/gitáros vezette zenekarnak a dobosokkal nincs szerencséje - Fernando Zapata már a harmadik zenész ezen a poszton, a Praise The Foolt még Agustín Armuna ütötte fel. Brossard, a gitáros Carlos Ricardi és a basszer Rodrigo Aguila már a kezdetektől tagjai a csapatnak, kicsit később érkezett a billentyűs Camilo Tarkowski. Brossard hangja kellemes színfolt, hiszen általában a hasonszőrű bandák két énekessel működnek, de a biográfia szerint Ignacio egyedüli hangszálkínzóként áll helyt a fronton. Hörgése kifejező, a tiszta énekes részeket is nagyon jól hozza. Különösen a több szólamú kísérletek szólnak remekül. Emellett a gitárszólókért is ő felel.

A Dishearthed zenéje amúgy nem túl eredeti, az előző évtized második felében gombamódra alakultak a durva verze-tiszta refrén-recepttel operáló csapatok, de a Dishearthed ezek között bizony kiemelkedően teljesít. Törekednek a változatosságra, ügyesen játszanak a tempókkal, és bizony a műfajban sarokkőnek számító dallamos vokáltémák is a helyükön vannak. Amit például a Darkchetype refrénjében Brossard levág, azzal nagyon durván alázza a melodeath énekesek 80%-át. Camilo működése sem a szabványos melodeath-szintetizátorozás, bizonyos témái engem a nyolcvanas évekbeli akciófilmek zenéire emlékeztetnek. (És ezt nem bántásból mondom, mert imádom azokat a zenéket!)
Igencsak különleges produkciót rakott le az asztalra a chilei ötös, és ezt nem csak a földrajzi elhelyezkedés miatt mondom. Tetszik a borító is, amit egy fiatal finn grafikus, Sami Antero Ahvenainen készített a srácok számára. A hangzás lehetne dögösebb, de hát nyilván a fiatal csapatok számára arrafelé sincs kolbászból a kerítés - ezzel nem arra célzok hogy élvezhetetlen volna, mert teljesen rendben van, tényleg csak a gitárok döngölhetnének jobban. A dallamos durvulatok szerelmesei mindenképpen tegyenek velük egy próbát!

I make no secret out of my habit that I like to search the web for previously unknown bands. The reason for this is that there are a great many bands in the underground who have to work without the blaze of the spotlights, who must work very hard every time to win the audience again and again. But because these bands are free of the requirements forced upon them by the industry, and are free of the clinking of heavy money, they can exercise their art without these two paralysing factors, often producing music that is of much higher quality and entertainment value.
I make no secret out of my habit that I like to search the web for previously unknown bands. The reason for this is that there are a great many bands in the underground who have to work without the blaze of the spotlights, who must work very hard every time to win the audience again and again. But because these bands are free of the requirements forced upon them by the industry, and are free of the clinking of heavy money, they can exercise their art without these two paralysing factors, often producing music that is of much higher quality and entertainment value.
Okay, I cut it out now: the greatest surprise of 2012 for me was (much alike to the debut of the British Subversion in 2011) the 6 tracks long EP of the Chilean Dishearthed.
Since the end of the '80-s the South-American bands have been chasing the Dream. The Dream that was presented to us by four guys from Belo Horizonte. The great success of Sepultura (nowadays running on a separate course from Cavalera) was needed to launch the death metal scene in the late '80-s. And, on a side note, they were the band, whom the grand idol with rather famous stage-shows, Slayer was AFRAID to bring on a tour - IF they did bring them at all. They still are the most famous South-American metal band, and all of a sudden I'm not sure I could mention another band from the continent that is famous even in Europe (apart from the Brazilian Angra, that is). Now it is high time to change this...

Only by chance did I encounter the second piece of music made by the dudes in Talagante (they already had a demo in 2009, Between the Light), and as soon as I began to listen to it, I was blown away. They are playing the music I love so much - metal music with hard riffs, made richer by excellent singing. If I wanted to liken them to some other band, I would definitely mention the second-third wave Scandinavian melodeath groups, like Soilwork, Scar Symmetry or Mercenary.
The band started working in earnest in 2009 and are fronted by guitarist/vocalist Ignacio Bossard. They hava a tough time with drummers though - Fernando Zapata is already the third man on the post, Praise the Fool was drummed through by Agustín Armuna. Brossard, the guitarist Carlos Ricardi and bassist Rodrigo Aguila were members from the very beginning, followed a little later by Camilo Tarkowski on keyboard. Brossard's voice is a pleasant surprise: bands like this usually have two vocalists, but according to their biography, Ignacio is the only "vocal cord killer" in the line. His screams are very expressing, and the clean vocals are also well-delivered. Especially good sounding are the multi-part singing sessions. He is also responsible for the guitar solos.
The musical conception of Dishearthed is not the most original one though - we have an invasion of bands following the "brutal verse - clean refrain" recipe, but Dishearthed are exceptionally good among them! They strive to achieve greater variety, they play with the tempo in a clever fashion, and the cardinal issue of the genre, the melodic vocal themes are nothing less than perfect. To mention a specific example: what Brossard delivers in the refrain of Darkchetype clearly humbles 80% of all melodeath singers. The play of Camilo is also more than the cliché melodeath-keys, some of his themes remind me of the action movie-soundtracks of the '80s. (And this is not a criticism, I love those soundtracks!)
The Chilean group did deliver an extraordinary production, and I'm not saying this because of their geographical location. I like the cover, too: it was prepared by a Finnish graphic designer, Sami Antero Ahvenainen. Even though the sound production could still be a bit sexier - I understand that young bands are not lottery winners in Chile either. I am not saying it is not good - but I could have endured some more guitar power.
You, lovers of melodic harshness - you must give this band a try!
